Tl vs. Medieval lutes had four or five courses of strings and were generally played with a quill. During the Renaissance, the number of strings was increased to six courses or more and it became common for the player to pluck the strings with fingertips.

The instrument remained popular up to the Baroque era. While now a more obscure instrument, it still has a following and there are active players and societies promoting it. One of the problems with studying very old instruments is that very few original examples survive. Fortunately, they are often depicted in contemporary artists. For example, Fig. The young woman is shown playing a six course lute by plucking it with her fingertips.

They originally had four courses of two strings each, evolving later to five courses. The Renaissance guitar had a long, thin neck, a slight waist, a flat back and flat top.

String tension was varied using tapered pegs as are now found in violins. It has seven strings in four courses, with the highest pitch string being single. Only two guitars are presently known to exist from the 16th century [10]; one is by the Portuguese maker Belchior Dias, working in Lisbon.

It is dated and is now in the Royal College of Music in London. The maker of the other instrument is unknown, but it appears to date from about and may also be by Dias. The instrument has a string length of mm By comparison, modern guitars have string lengths also called scale lengths in the range of mm — mm It is strung with five courses of paired strings and has a deeply fluted, curved back.

The instrument is larger, with a scale length of about mm It has a flat back made of eight flat strips of wood joined together with interspersed light strips. Note the original is fitted with five courses of strings while the reproduction has four courses. Notable features include the curved, fluted back, tied-on frets and a fretboard level with the top of the instrument the soundboard.

Note also that the soundhole is covered by a decorative carving similar to those found on lutes. This, too, is an instrument with a flat top and a slight waist [12]. Indeed, it is easy to mistake one for the other. Only a few of these instruments survive. This example, dating from the 16th century, has a fluted back and a wider body than shown in surviving images. Like many vihuelas, it has 12 strings in six courses.

Daniel Larson has made a replica based on a study of the original instrument Fig. In Italy and Portugal, a similar instrument was called the viola di mano. The modifier indicates that it was played with fingertips. It was sometimes played with a bow and, in such form, it evolved into the viol also called the viola da gamba. While the vihuela is structurally similar to the early guitars, it is musically separate. It was tuned differently and had a separate, distinct repertory. Musically, it may have been more closely related to the lute.

The Baroque guitar was smaller than modern guitars and more lightly built. Typically, it had five courses of strings, of which either four or five courses were doubled [15].

Technology of the Guitar

Thus, both nine and ten stringed instruments appear to have been common. In keeping with the aesthetics of the period, Baroque guitars appear to have been ornate, especially when compared with modern instruments.

The Baroque guitar was a common enough instrument to have been shown in significant works of art. The woman in the painting is shown playing a five course instrument with a single soundhole fitted with a decorative rose. Like earlier instruments, the soundboard is level with the fretboard and extends partway up the neck. Both the body and neck are bound with a bold alternating pattern. The most famous luthier of the Baroque period, Antonio Stradivari, is known to have made at least two guitars [15, 16].

One, The Rawlins, was made in It has a flat softwood top with figured maple back and sides, just as his violins do. There is an angled headstock with friction pegs for the five courses of strings.

Like earlier instruments, it has a single piece bridge with tied on strings and no separate saddle. The single center soundhole is fitted with an elaborately carved rose. The Romantic period overlaps the Classical period somewhat and is considered to run from about to Guitars from the 10 1 Overview Fig. Instruments from the beginning of this era look to us archaic: they have paired courses of gut strings; they are tuned with pegs; and they have fret boards that are level with the sound boards.

Some are also very ornate, with elaborate inlays and decorations in the sound holes.

By the early Romantic period, guitars look much more familiar [17]. At first glance, they seem like smaller, thinner versions of modern classical guitars. During this period, the guitar evolved to an instrument with six individual strings rather than pairs of strings.

Other refinements during this period included the initial use of fixed metal frets and raising the fret board above the soundboard. It was also common for instruments of the period to be tuned with mechanical tuning machines rather than friction pegs [18]. Other significant developments are not visible from the outside. Perhaps the most important of these is the use of fan bracing for the soundboard.

It had been common to brace the soundboard with a few lateral bars, like those shown in Fig.

This arrangement is often called ladder bracing. Note that the guitar on the right has one slanted bar. This instrument has also been heavily repaired; the lighter diamondshaped and rectangular patches are wood that has been glued in to repair cracks.

This instrument has a particularly interesting history and 1. There are several characteristic design features clearly visible in this instrument.

Starting at the headstock, it uses friction pegs to tune the strings. Moving down the neck, the fretboard and the soundboard join at the 9th fret, well up on the neck.

The neck actually joins the body at the 12th fret. This feature is only possible because the fretboard and soundboard are level with one another. Since there is no fretboard over the body and the designer wanted to provide more than 12 frets for the player, additional frets have been set directly into the soundboard.

The body has a very pronounced waist. Indeed the width of the instrument at the waist is only twice the soundhole diameter. That said, the soundhole is very familiar to a modern viewer. There is only one large soundhole encircled by a decorative ring, the rosette. Early bridges were often just simple blocks with holes or slots for the strings.

The bridge is a simple block with holes for nine strings in five courses. The end of the string is formed essentially by the block and the loop of string wrapped over it. This would seem to form an imprecise boundary condition.

It is, thus, worth noting that the Grobert instrument has a separate saddle that forms a clearly defined 12 1 Overview Fig. The part of the bridge that anchors the string so it can be put under tension by the tuner is behind the saddle. This instrument has a much narrower body than is now common, but is otherwise familiar. An important feature of this instrument is the fan-braced top. Note also that this instrument has a separate, raised fretboard that spans both the neck and the soundboard up to the soundhole.

It was during this period that virtuoso performers achieved international success and compositions for the guitar were published and widely distributed. Probably the most well known of this group was Fernando Sor. In addition to being a very successful performer, he was a composer and left a body of work that is still being performed.

It is not correct to assume that Torres was personally responsible for all the features of his guitars. If you want to stop the clock, close S2.

The best part is the current drain — about microamps. The single center soundhole is fitted with an elaborately carved rose.
